Villa Santa Clara is a luxurious private suite in Chapala's newly remodeled mansion, VILLA ANTIGUA AVE MARIA. Built at the turn of the 20th century by famed Mexican architect Guillermo de Alba, the home had fallen into complete disrepair and was purchased as an abandoned relic in February 2006.
An elegant sweeping staircase (copied from a famed Havana mansion) leads from the courtyard to this 2nd floor home. From the covered 2nd floor loggia entrance, you will be amazed by the attention to detail this home (1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room, dining room & kitchen) has to offer. Hand painted ceiling beams grace the living room with a carved English mahogany fireplace. Stained and beveled glass is used in handcrafted metal frames with gothic windows gracing either side of the large raised hearth faced with marble. Persian rugs and runners grace the dark checkerboard-tile floors. Unique reproduction furnishings reign throughout. A modern black and white kitchen with hand wrought copper accents, all new appliances (refrigerator/freezer, 4 burner range with oven) is a rather surprising accent, with peek-a-boo views of Lake Chapala. A centuries-old wall of brick has been preserved in the dining room with its boveda "tunnel" ceiling and dome, and a half wall decorated with tiles in the "Poblana" style. An elegant glass & wrought iron door leads to a lovely and very private back terrace suitable for dining alfresco. There is also a small utility room with new washer/dryer. The gracious master bedroom has a king size bed and overlooks the
loggia.
A large master bath has copper basins with antiqued copper faucets, and an 'au centre' copper bathtub in front of a wood burning fireplace, with a separate talavera tiled shower. All hand painted talavera tiles are from Dolores Hidalgo. All copper was custom made in the small Mexican village named SANTA CLARA de COBRE... thus the name of this exquisite spacious home.
